Important information about changes to Sex Worker Literati!

Changes are coming to Sex Worker Literati – some really exciting ones!
As many of you know, in just under one year that Sex Worker Literati has been running at Happy Ending Lounge, we’ve had some amazing experiences. Since August 2009, we have featured more than 50 sex workers from around the country – and even some international guests – who have read, monologued, performed, and shimmied their ways into our hearts, minds, and naughty bits. We’ve also built a fundraising component into the evening, donating a percentage of the bar income to sex worker organizations each month. But now, we’ve just grown too big to continue as we have…so we’re making some changes and we know you’ll be as excited about them as we are!

Audacia Ray will be continuing the Happy Ending tradition of a First Thursday night reading & performance series, under a different name: The Red Umbrella Diaries. The series will bring together current & former sex worker performers with the audiences that have come to love these story tellers’ particular takes on their lives, loves, and work. Audacia will continue to raise money for sex worker advocacy groups at each performance and produce videos of the performers. Learn more about Audacia’s upcoming themes, performers, and watch the latest videos at http://RedUmbrellaProject.com.

Starting this September, David Henry Sterry will be taking Sex Worker Literati uptown to Bowery Poetry Club at 308 Bowery! It will be a great chance for socializing with and listening to amazing performers, and hang out with other sexy people enjoying the usual fun and flirtatiousness that you’ve come to expect & love! Tentatively scheduled for the first Thursday nights, there are still details to be finalized, but not to worry – just check out http://hoshookercallgirlsrentboys.com for more information about Sex Worker Literati!

Peepstar. Hustler. Notorious Nude Club Manager. Outlaw Artist and Writer. Warrior. From peddling firecrackers to live sex shows, legendary hardcore hustler Guy Gonzales was born in Manhattan of Asian-American ancestry. Despite the façade of a decent upbringing, he became enticed by the filthy streets. Flesh emporiums fueled his incentive; in 1982 Guy gravitated to Times Square, a reputed red-light district, and began as a cashier/mop-man in the adult peep shows. While swabbing pools of disgrace, he dated a Private Booth showgirl; subsequently they became a Love-Team, performing live sex acts on stage. On a mattress stained with bodily fluids, he penetrated even deeper into the inner sanctum of smut. Guy’s artwork, articles, and photo essays have been featured in Screw, Hustler, Swank, Vibe, the Village Voice, and Penthouse Forum. Featured in TimeOutNY as the leader of the Mortuary Squad, an elite task force that documents the underbelly; and the 40th Anniversary Issue of New York Magazine. A+E ‘Biography’ entitled ‘Times Square’ chronicled his unusual experiences, with interviews and illustrations. Exhibitions include ‘Erotopath’ and ‘Viewer Discretion Advised’. In 2006 he exhibited at the Ayala Museum, Makati, the Philippines, with former President Fidel Ramos in attendance. A noir New Yorker, Guy continues to evoke the broken mirror ball on the fringe of a forgotten Times Square, as his autobiographical account PEEPMAN/DEUCE42 nears completion.

David Henry Sterry, Editor of Hos, Hookers, Call Girls, and Rent Boys, chats with Red Bank Orbit’s Tom Chesek about his recent Asbury Park appearance to discuss his work, a screening of “Hollywood and the Sexworker”, and a conversation about sex work with other writers. Chesek covers all the bases – from Sterry’s sex work history, his time in Hollywood, his writing, and his current inspirations…

“…Makes you wonder whenever you meet up with one of these couples at some fundraiser reception. And the flip side is that you never know when someone you meet has worked in the sex industry in some capacity.

Oh, sex workers walk among us! They’re our moms and daughters and aunts and uncles. They’re everywhere.

Hey, the other day my wife finds out that a college student she knows has her own page with an escort service that once employed Ashley Dupre, of Eliot Spitzer scandal fame.

Really! Well, that proves my point. There’s the stereotype of the woman who’s working her way toward getting her Masters, her Ph.D. Think about that next time you see a doctor. Once you look into it, you see just how much of mainstream society is buying or selling something in this world.

Well, you haven’t been shy about your own experiences in the industry.

I’ve written two memoirs from those experiences, Chicken and Master of Ceremonies. My next one will be Sports, Sex and Show Business. I had my own show business career for a time, you know; I was on The Fresh Prince for a couple of episodes, but I got tired of the acting world. I didn’t want to be second banana, didn’t want to be ‘Buddy #3′ anymore.

Well, if the highlight of your career is a supporting part on a sitcom, it kind of dooms you to be Larry from THREE’S COMPANY for life. You can’t get hired for anything else in Hollywood, but you can always star in LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS at Bucks County Playhouse.

Exactly! I just felt like a cog in a machine that I inherently hated. You know, I was already a troubled person back then, and things just came to a head — my hypnotherapist that I was seeing suggested that I write about my life, and that’s how I transitioned into being an author.

Not that being a writer is any more respectable than being Larry from THREE’S COMPANY.

Oh, the writer is way down on the pole from what gets up there on the screen. Everything they always said about writers in Hollywood is true — the writer has no power, still. You’re just a hired hand that can be fired at will…”

You can read the rest of the article at the Red Bank Orbit website.

Her latest project is Gerrification, a global effort designed to bring joy and beauty to America and the world. Everyone needs a makeover. Far better than Paxil or Prozac, dressing like Gerry will improve your mood and your life just by being photographed donning her signature platinum wig, cat-eye glasses, and a spangly outfit.

In addition to co-producing her hit burlesque show HyperGender Burlesque in NYC, she is a videographer, professional singer, makeup artist, model and now sex blogger. She writes for the burlesque/sex themed blog The Vagina Adventures which are stories from a queer switch who is all about her vagina, and the women and things that go in them.

Recently, David Henry Sterry (editor of Hos, Hookers, Call Girls, and Rent Boys) was interviewed by the editors of Lolita Mag; here’s an excerpt of the article.

“…And so, for the following school year, David Henry Sterry worked as a ‘chicken’, a teenage prostitute who was hired out to rich Los Angeles women for $100 plus an hour. His experience at the hands of the steak guy compelled him to insist he have sex only with women, and unlike most gigolos, he was young and good-looking enough to satisfy his pimps on this basis (although towards the end of his career; he did take the occasional ‘non-sex’ job with men, usually freaky types who wanted him to beat them up). Armed with a pager supplied by his ‘employment counsellor’, he punctuated lectures, sports and college dating with agency ‘tricks’, servicing some of the wealthiest women in California. Ironically, almost thirty years later, Los Angeles seems set to make Sterry rich again, with solicitations this time coming from Hollywood’s other big money trade. Now in his early forties, Sterry has written a memoir of his year in the sex business – Chicken: Love For Sale On The Streets Of Hollywood – and film studios are battling for the rights to his story. Published this month by Canongate in the UK, Chicken is a funny, illuminating and disturbing record of the high-rent lifestyle, a tale which belies society’s often one-dimensional attitude towards male prostitution. Its greatest strength is in showing how Sterry’s attitude to his career was (and is) painfully ambiguous – sometimes he thought he was the luckiest 17-year-old in the world, getting paid to have sex with older women, while at others he sensed he was nothing more than a shamefully exploited teenager. More often than not, he was both at the same time…

What kind of things did your clients require from you?
About half the women wanted very specific, fetishistic things. One wanted me to crawl under the covers and service her orally while she never made a sound or moved a muscle – it was like she wanted to reproduce something that had happened in her early life. And then the other half didn’t even seem to want sex – they wanted to talk about their miserable husbands and terrible kids. Most times they wanted me naked, and I think that says a lot about the power dynamic between the sexes in our culture – they wanted to pay a boy to take his clothes off while they remained fully dressed. These were all rich, powerful women who lived in mansions and drove huge automobiles, but they still felt powerless in life and sexually dominated by men. So they wanted to order someone around.

Were they mostly ‘frustrated middle-aged’ types?
I’d guess the youngest was about 30, and then I did have a grandma who’d never had anyone go down on her in eighty years! Someone gave me to her as a present. Everyone always says that must have been gross, but actually I felt honoured, and she was such a sweet, lovely person.

Were you ever unable to get it up for a client?
I always managed to perform, though I can’t say my heart was always in it. But then you’re not paid for your heart, you’re paid for your body. There were many times when I faltered and drooped, but I had this mechanism where I would activate this voice in my head that I called the ‘loverstudguy’. It was like one of those cheesy, corny soundtracks to bad porno with this voice going: (adopts Barry White style growl) ‘Ooh, yeah, baby, you love it, don’t you baby’. That’d make me feel like this sexy guy who could perform.

What did the job teach you about female sexuality?
I was once hired by a hippy chick who taught me how to do tantric sex (one of the greatest jobs I ever had in my life!), and she gave me such a valuable lesson. She said, ‘If you can make a woman’s pleasure your top priority and figure out what makes the woman in front of you happy sexually, then that woman will do anything for you’. They’re just so fucking grateful, because they get so little of it in life. After that, they’re like: ‘You want me to put on the Scuba outfit? Well, OK, honey.’…”

To read the full interview, you can visit the Lolita Mags Website (please be warned, there are numerous explicit ads and graphics, so don’t click from work!).

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. SRLP is a collective organization founded on the understanding that gender self-determination is inextricably intertwined with racial, social and economic justice. Therefore, we seek to increase the political voice and visibility of low-income people and people of color who are transgender, intersex, or gender non-conforming. SRLP works to improve access to respectful and affirming social, health, and legal services for our communities. We believe that in order to create meaningful political participation and leadership, we must have access to basic means of survival and safety from violence.

I was in San Francisco on my annual visit with my friend Peter Berlin. While there, I became a little over-zealous with the spending whilst at Marshall’s clothing store; shopping for my son’s up-and-coming birthday. I basically (foolishly) spent all but 12 dollars! I still had 3 days left in San Francisco and was basically out of money and in full panic mode…never wanting to borrow money from Peter.

Anyhow, so Peter & I were about to have our breakfast when he’d informed me that I’d missed a call from my friend Juliet Anderson. He said she had called very early in the morning and she told him she wanted me to hop a train to Berkeley to come see her that afternoon. (This was the some day Michael Jackson had passed away.)

I was embarrassed about my over-spending and, not wanting to spend that last few bucks on the train, I returned her call; intent on telling her “sorry, next time”. When she picked up the phone, she asked me if I had ever done any “sex work”!

Well, I told her I did yes I had, in the past, in varying capacities; one of which was as a burlesque entertainer. She’d told me she had a very good and long-time customer of hers who was waiting she and I to do a “double” with him and that he would pay us handsomely…and she reassured me: ”no penetration”.

I talked it over with Peter and he said it was a very good idea and it made perfect sense. (He even lent me his BART pass!)

I took her up on that offer.

So, when I arrived at her house to meet her for the 1st time in person, (though we’d been speaking on the telephone, sending things in the post and emailing for 6 years previously) my first glimpse of her was Juliet opening the door in a vivid, amethyst -colored silk (short) nightie!

I marveled at this beaming, radiant, statuesque senior Goddess who, in turn, whirled; giggling girlishly and flashed me her magnificent un-augmented voluminous breasts and her still firm derriere. We had a short interlude introduction and chat before she informed me that “he” was showered and waiting in the boudoir.

We entered, did a little dance together which I can only describe an some rendition of a “pre-talkies flapper dance”, and we basically shared in the daunting task of blowing this 3″ endowed curved-dicked man. She was mastering the helm proficiently (and rather noisily!) whilst I chipped in with a little ‘hands-on’.

She and I were face-to-face when she took his diminutive dick out of her mouth and held it there, poised in the exact manner in which Sherlock Holmes famously held his curved pipe and said the following to me:

“Oh Denise! Isn’t this fabulous; us meeting like this? It’s like 2 girlfriends, chatting over a LATTE!”

I almost (literally) pissed myself laughing and that man was laughing too; his big, jolly belly convulsing like an earthquake! Talk about an ice-breaker!!!

It was a very positive and surreal scenario for all 3 of us and the addition of her cantankerous angry-neighbor-lady BLASTING Michael Jackson’s song “BEAT IT” as the ’sound-scape’ while all of this was going on just enhanced the sensation we were living in some bizarre Salvador Dali performance piece!

(All that was missing was the flaming loaf of bread on one of our head’s!)

That is what it was like for me to finally MEET Juliet Anderson.

Let me just reassure you, her Life was anything but dull.
